Clear Sky, Henderson and Sutton Deliver One-Two in 2010 Season Opener
The journey from drawing board to podium was a short one for Dave Brailsford and Team Sky as Greg Henderson (formerly of Team HTC-Columbia) and Chris Sutton finished one-two in today's 51km Cancer Council Helpline Classic in Adelaide.
Contested over a 1.7km closed circuit, the race not only provided a small preview of the 6th stage of the Santos Tour Down Under, which begins Tuesday, January 19th, but it also served as the 2010 season opener for many, including Lance Armstrong and his Team RadioShack squad.
Judging by the high speeds — some riders topped out at 44 mph (71km/h) — and the outcome of the contest, the 2010 season looks to be a volatile one with the peloton already looking to be in mid-season form and Team Sky working more like a veteran squad rather than the ProTour newcomers.
"It's fantastic, to get a victory in our very first race together is incredible - it's unheard of," said an elated Henderson soon after crossing the line. "I looked around with a couple of laps to go and the guys were all there for me...We've gelled so quickly, we're just like brothers and will do anything for each other."
Robbie McEwen (Team Katusha) would nip HTC-Columbia's Andre Greipel, who won the 2008 edition of the Tour Down Under, at the line for third place.
