SpiderTech Takes Over As Title Sponsor for Canada’s Planet Energy
After a successful collaboration last season, which culminated in a victory in the final stage of the Tour of Missouri, SpiderTech - the sixteen ready-to-apply taping applications known as Spiders designed to improve performance by supporting muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, alleviate pain and correct joint problems - has elevated their commitment to become the title sponsor of Team Planet Energy, Canada’s only UCI continental squad. The team, run by Cycle Sport Management and directed by Olympic silver medalist and Tour de France stage winner Steve Bauer, will compete in 2010 as SpiderTech presented by Planet Energy.
Developed and distributed by the Toronto, Ontario-based NUCAP MEDICAL, SpiderTech was introduced last year and was swiftly embraced by cyclists as well as professional and collegiate sports including football, baseball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, running and triathlon. Last spring, SpiderTech came on-board as a sponsor of Team Planet Energy and sponsored the medical staff at last September’s Tour of Missouri, one of the most prestigious races in the U.S. featuring many of the best professional teams and marquee riders from the international peloton in the seven-day, seven-stage, 600+-mile race. Team Planet Energy’s Martin Gilbert won Stage 7 in an electrifying field sprint. Other riders who wore SpiderTech in the race included Tour de France sprint points winner Thor Hushovd and Olympic medalist and Grand Tour podium finisher Levi Leipheimer.
“As a new Canadian company, everyone at SpiderTech is proud to become the title sponsor of a young and dynamic Canadian professional cycling team, which competes at the highest level on the international stage,” said NUCAP MEDICAL’s president Michael Greenberg. “We traveled with the team last year to Philly (for the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship) and Missouri and we worked closely with Team Planet Energy throughout the year. It was exciting to watch these marvelous athletes benefit in numerous ways from the use of SpiderTech. The cycling community has made us feel welcome and we’ve witnessed the growth of the SpiderTech brand throughout both the professional and amateur pelotons. We’re thrilled about spreading the SpiderTech web across the globe with the SpiderTech presented by Planet Energy riders leading the way.”
Heading into their fourth season, the newly christened SpiderTech presented by Planet Energy squad boasts a core group of Canadian riders consisting of Gilbert, Mark Batty, Eric Boily, Keven Lacombe, Bruno Langlois, François Parisien, Andrew Randell, Ryan Roth and Charly Vives. Adding firepower to the talented line-up is American Lucas Euser (formerly of Garmin-Slipstream) along with David Boily, Guilluame Boivin, Stephane Cossette, Flavio De Luna and Simon Lambert-Lemay.
SpiderTech presented by Planet Energy will be presented to the media at an exclusive invitation-only event on January 28th at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto hosted by NUCAP MEDICAL’s owner Ray Arbesman with his wife, Karen, which will also pay tribute to Bauer. A silent auction open to the public will be held with the items up for bid including Bauer’s final yellow jersey worn during the 1990 Tour de France.
Created by Dr. Kevin Jardine, SpiderTech has revolutionized the methodologies of kinesiology taping through pre-cut applications, which for the first time provide a standardization of treatment in clinical use. The ready-to-apply Spider applications meet the needs of rehabilitative professionals by providing a synergistic influence on performance enhancement, pain reduction, and prevention of injury, the triad of which is referred to as “3P” – Performance, Pain & Prevention. SpiderTech is fabricated from high-grade cotton material with 100% acrylic, hypoallergenic adhesive. The tape is water-resistant and breathable, and can be worn for up to five days.
