To Ride, Perchance To Dream – Bicycle Dreams

Dreams have been described physiologically, psychologically, and spiritually. In this respect, Stephen Auerbach's film about the Race Across America (RAAM), Bicycle Dreams, is appropriately named. Few sporting events, with maybe the exception of ultra marathons, have tapped into those three essential cores of humanity quite like RAAM; an event which is roughly 800 miles longer in distance than the Tour de France, but is covered in approximately a third less of the time.

The documentary film, which has received critical acclaim and won awards at various film festivals, covers the individual competition of the 2005 Race Across America. Sadly, it was in this edition of RAAM that saw Dr. Bob Breedlove pedal his final miles. He is featured prominently throughout, and in some respect this film serves as a lasting tribute to the ultracycling legend.

As much of a labor of love that RAAM was to Breedlove, the making of this film was, on several levels, also one for Auerbach, who personally edited over 500 minutes of video down to its final 100 minute run time.

"I saw these guys and gals as heroes and wanted to document what they were willing to endure to achieve a goal. I knew this would provide an opportunity to show an audience how to find their own strength and how to connect with their own true desire. Even in defeat, these athletes are successful, that says a lot and I felt that I wanted to be part of that message. They inspire me, so of course, I had hoped to create a film that could inspire people across the globe."

Those who have ever participated in endurance events, fought back the negative voices, and pushed through the monotony of their movements will be starkly reminded of their dichotomous relationship with their sport, while the casual observer will be dually inspired and disturbed by the extents to which others attempt to live out their dreams. And in that, Auerbach's film succeeds. Bicycle Dreams is what this genre of documentary film making is truly meant to be: objective story-telling that makes no excuses for displaying the physiological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of the human condition.
