Allar Continues Podium Trend in Speedweek Crit Series

By Jessi Braverman

Walterboro, SC - Team Vera Bradley Foundation added to their podium count on Wednesday evening when Erica Allar sprinted to second at the Downtown Walterboro Criterium. The finish is Allar’s third podium over the first four Speedweek crits.

“To be on the podium multiple times shows that my form has improved, and I’m far more consistent than in the past,” says Allar. “It’s nice, but I’m still hoping to find myself on the top step during one of the races we have left.”

The top step at Walterboro was once again occupied by Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita-Baci). The Colavita-Baci team seemed content to allow the race come down to a field sprint and shut down the multiple attacks launched by DFT p/b Treads, BMW-Bianchi and Team Type 1. Carrie Cash took turns at the front to kept the pace high and contest cash primes while Allar stayed toward the front safely tucked into the bunch ready to go with any threats that went up the rode. “Primes were plentiful,” said Cash, “And that was really the drive. It was a race for primes until the last two laps when it became a race for the finish.”

In the final lap, Sam Schneider (TIBCO) jumped first going into the third corner. “I was sitting third wheel behind Theresa and Sam,” says Allar. “I was able to get around Sam but not Theresa in the finishing stretch.” Cash finished 10th.

Allar currently sits second in the overall behind Cliff-Ryan. The Speedweek Crit Series travels to Spartanburg, SC on Friday.
