With Gent-Wevelgem moving from its customary location, sandwiched between the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, and to the week prior to the Ronde, Scheldeprijs has become the new mid-week Classic.
Much like the man, George Hincapie, whom he was tabbed to succeed, Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) would be the first American to win the mid-week Classic; Hincapie taking Gent-Wevelgem in 2001. The 25-year-old from Wenatchee, Washington would out kick Australian Robbie McEwen (Team Katusha) and German Robert Forster (Team Milram) to the line.
