2010 Giro Donne, Preview

The 21st Giro Donne, the women's version of the Giro d'Italia, begins today in the town of Muggia. The 10-day, 10 stage event will once again feature many of the world's top riders headlined by defending champion, Claudia Hausler of Team Cervelo Test Team. But if Hausler should falter, look for Cervelo to play their other card, Emma Pooley, who is without doubt on form this year after victories at La Flech Wallone and at the difficult Tour de l'Aude.

While Cervelo Test Team will most likely boast of having the strongest overall team in the field, a host of other contenders such as Marianne Vos (Netherlands), Judith Arndt (Team HTC-Columbia), Tatiana Guderzo (Vardarno), Edita Pucinskaite (Gauss RDZ Ormu) Mara Abbott (United States National Team), and Evelyn Stevens (Team HTC-Columbia), will surely challenge for the General Classification.

Many may consider the latter two on the list to be dark-horses, with Stevens most likely being given a supporting role to Arndt on Team HTC-Columbia, but both Americans will surely be close to the top of the General Classification once the race hits the high mountains, where anything and everything can happen.
