Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 Tayler Wiles Third, Colavita’s Logan-Sprenger Takes Win – 25th SRAM Tour of the Gila, Stage 2
Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12’s Tayler Wiles third; Kristin Armstrong returns to Boise to prepare for Amgen Tour of California Invitational Time Trial
Silver City, New Mexico - Today’s 77 mile Inner Loop was the second stage of the 25th edition of the SRAM Tour of the Gila. Typically a stage that sees a break stay away, today’s stage was no different.
The group maintained intact up the 1000 foot climb to Pinos Altos and through the beautiful woods of the Gila National Forest. Down the Sapillo Descent the group was disintegrated, but reformed shortly after.
After the second sprint, Anna Barensfield (Missing Link Coaching System) attacked, followed by Heather Logan-Sprenger (Colavita/Forno D'Asolo). The two quickly put time into the unconcerned field. When the break reached 2 minutes 30 seconds, Diadora/Pasta began to rotate at the front maintaining a safe gap for the race leader Mara Abbott.
As the gap began coming down, and the severe climbing lessened, the attacks came hard and fast from the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team. One after another they fired attacks until finally Tayler Wiles (inset) was able to put enough time into the field that the other teams could not close it. Joining her was Kristen Lasasso (Primal/MapMyRIDE). The two of them were closing the gap to the then solo Logan-Sprenger.
Wiles pushed the pace, matching Lasasso’s eagerness to catch Logan-Sprenger. In a nail biting final kilometers, Logan-Sprenger managed to hold off the surging Wiles and Lasasso, winning the stage. Lasasso jumped hard out of the final corner, and digging deep, Wiles tried to come by her but after her work just did not quite have the pop left necessary to do so.
With the top three out of contention for the overall, the main group rolled to the line, with the top overall contenders tucked in, waiting for tomorrow’s 16.15 mile strenuous time trial. With strong winds and gusts well over 50 MPH, tomorrow’s race of truth will truly be a test of power, speed and perseverance.
Thank you for the notes to Kristin she is feeling a little better and returned home to Boise today and will rest up and be ready for Amgen Tour of California Women's Invitational Time Trial
