Despite an injury to her collarbone in May, Marianne Vos (Stichting Rabo Women), showed little ill effects in claiming the first leg of the 2012 Giro Donne.
The defending Giro Donne champion started the event where she left off from last year, in pink, as she narrowly pipped American Shelley Olds (AA Drink - Leontien.nl) in Terracina to win the first and the longest stage (139.1 kilometer) of the nine day affair. Reigning World Champion, Giorgia Bronzini (Diadora Pasta Zara) rounded out the podium.
"I am very happy," exclaimed Vos at the finish. "I always start with the idea of winning, but on the way there is never a certainty of being the best. This time, after the recent injury to the shoulder, I was did not know of my condition. Today's stage was a good test, especially in view of the World Championship and Olympic events that lie ahead. Tomorrow I will be very excited to compete in the time trial in Rome with the pink jersey. Unlike last year, I am not pointing to the overall standings, but I live day to day in this Giro."
