American Olds Wins Stage, Ready for Olympics
On the day in which her country traditionally celebrates its Day of Independence with fireworks, American Shelley Olds (AA Drink - Leontien.nl) supplied some of her own during Stage 6 of the 2012 Giro d'Italia Femminile Internazionale.
Olds, who was recently named to USA Cycling's London Olympic contingent, confirmed her selection by taking the bunch sprint ahead of race leader Marianne Vos (Stichting Rabo Women) and World Champion, Giorgia Bronzini (Diadora - Pasta Zara).
"I'm delighted! The team was amazing today," exclaimed Olds.
On a day in which the race organizers paid tribute to the victims of the Emilia Romagna earthquake, which effected five provinces in the region, a break of 13 strong, including eventual winner Olds, went up the road. Though the breakaway would be reeled back in after 52 kilometers, Olds was able to refocus for the finale.
The victory brought her overall Giro Donne stage tally to two, her first coming in 2010 in Monza. Olds' next stop will be England, where she will begin her final preparations for the 2012 London Games.
