Carson, CA – Two-time Olympian and local track cycling coach Adam Duvendeck was named manager of The Home Depot Center’s Velodrome and Event Center. In his new role at the 2,450-seat facility, Duvendeck will oversee the operations, marketing and programming for the nation’s most complete indoor track cycling facility and training center for USA Cycling’s National Track Cycling Team.

“We’re thrilled to officially welcome Adam to The Home Depot Center and recognize his wealth of experience, on and off the track,” said The Home Depot Center General Manager Katie Pandolfo. “Adam is no stranger to Carson, and his commitment to our facility and the community will be an asset as we move forward with expanding the reach and programming for the Velodrome and Event Center.”

An experienced coach and athlete and local community leader, Duvendeck has trained and coached at The Home Depot Center, and as an Olympian Mentor for community organization, Ready, Set, Gold!, he’s organized an annual clinic in Carson for local elementary schools to educate children and promote fitness. Most recently, Duvendeck coached the USA Paralympic Track Cycling team, where he worked with riders from development stages to the elite level, and founded Momentum Coaching Group, a coaching company dedicated to all cycling disciplines, including triathlon. He has also served as the head sprint coach for the Canadian national track cycling team, as well as the head cycling coach at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

On the track, Duvendeck is a decorated track cyclist. A 2004 and 2008 Olympian, he is also a five-time U.S. Track Cycling National Champion and a five-time U.S. Track Cycling World Championship team member. “I am extremely excited to begin my time as manager of the Velodrome and Event Center. I was a part of the facility’s opening in 2004 and remember the incredible feeling I had walking into the only world-class velodrome in North America,” said Duvendeck. “Since that day, I have spent much of my time here as both a coach and an athlete. I believe it will be my familiarity with the phenomenal facility and all of The Home Depot Center’s programs and venues, coupled with the experience I have gained in high-end athletics for the past ten years, which will positively see the Event Center through the next phase of its development.”

The Home Depot Center Velodrome and Event Center is part of the campus’ 125-acre multi-sport facility that is an Official U.S. Olympic Training Site and home to USA Cycling’s National Track Cycling Team. The indoor Velodrome boasts a 250-meter track and infield that features two indoor basketball courts and five volleyball courts. In addition to track cycling, the center hosts basketball, volleyball and tae kwon do tournaments, youth sports clinics, and was transformed into an indoor skateboard park for the 2006 X Games.

But, it didn't take long for me to come down with "fixed gear fever."

Having lived in close proximity to two velodromes, the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook, IL and the Washington Park Velodrome in Kenosha, WI, and with three Chicagoland area bike shops offering free fixed gear rentals, it was hard not to get hooked. I considered myself truly blessed.

But since I moved to Michigan, I now consider myself just plain spoiled.

Just northeast of Ann Arbor is the Velodrome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, MI. The 1/8th of a mile wooden track was designed by Dale Hughes, who also designed the Olympic velodrome for the Atlanta Games (among others).

The banking is 18 degrees in the straights and 44 degrees in the corners. At a little over 28mph in the corners, you are perfectly perpendicular to the ground; anything over that you actually begin to tilt inward past perpendicular.

Considering that I learned on a track where the banking is only 18 degrees in the corners, my interests, as well as my nerves, were immediately piqued.

I spent all weekend out on the track getting comfortable and relearning most of the skills I developed last year. I essentially felt like a track newbie. The regulars who run the track, however, were more than happy to take me through the paces and provide me with any instruction I needed. I even got a helping hand from one of my former xXx-Athletico racing teammates, Dave, who is originally from the area and comes back often to race.

Atlhough I have yet to "cut my racing teeth" at Bloomer Park, with the Madison being this velodrome's bread-and-butter, any reason to get this "late bloomer" out on the track suits me just fine (just don't ask me to do another cone drill).

In his second attempt, Hoy narrowly missed the record by 5 one-thousandths of a second, clocking the second fastest kilometre ever (58.880 to Tournant's 58.875).

Hoy didn't leave La Paz empty handed, however, as he set the World Record in the 500m from a standing start. He bettered the previous mark of 25.85 by another Frenchman, Arnaud Duble.

Twice As Nice...
It has been said that its easier to get to the top than to stay there. Regardless, Sarah Hammer, now knows the feeling from both sides of the fence as she was able to repeat in the 3km Individual Pursuit.

For those who don't have a velodrome nearby or have never ventured onto the pine, the pursuit is considered one of track cycling's endurance events. But that can even be a misnomer as the speeds can be very fast. The event I liken it most to is the 800m in track, where you need the speed of a sprinter, but the endurance of a 1-2 miler.

The individual pursuit is held in the men's (4km) and women's (3km) category. The team pursuit is held only in the men's category, at the same distance. A rider, or team of four, starts at opposite ends of the track and attempts to cover the distance as quickly as possible. If there's a huge disparity between the competitors the race looks almost like greyhounds chasing a mechanical rabbit around the dog track. If an individual or team catches and passes the other before the covered distance, the race is over.

Other Champions include:
Men's:
Chris Hoy (GBR) - Kilo & Keirin; Theo Bos (NED) - Sprints; Alois Kankovsky (CZE) - Omnium; Bradley Wiggins (GBR)- Indiviual Pursuit; Kam Po Wong (CHN) - Scratch; Joan Llaneras (ESP) - Points; Mickaël Bourgain and Arnaud Tournant (FRA) - Team Sprints; Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli (SWI) - Madison; Great Britain - Team Pursuit.

Women's:
Victoria Pendelton (GBR) - Sprints & Keirin; Yumari Gonzalez Valdivieso (CUB) - Scratch; Katherine Bates (AUS) - Points; Victoria Pendelton and Shanaze Reade (GBR) - Team Sprints.

Track cycling's best will be in attendance on the Spanish island of Mallorca this week as the World Championships take place in the brand new Palma Arena starting Thursday (March 29th to April 1st).

Construction of the 5185 seat (capacity can be expanded for other events) arena, seemed to follow the recent trend of constructing large scale sporting venues in Europe, as it took a flurry of activity to have it complete in a timely fashion (remember the Olympics in Athens?). With 500 men working simultaneously and 50 million Euros later (90% of the bill being picked up by the government), Palma was completed with just a little over a month to spare. Did I mention construction began in November of 2005.

The velodrome, however, has taken on the look of being one of track cycling's gems (notice all the natural lighting). You can follow the action through Fixed Gear Fever's Live Feed.

Well in order to incorporate another flavor to this blog, we've added the site Fixed Gear Fever to our list of sites to visit (see sidebar). The site is probably the most comprehensive of its kind on the internet (although I've seen some great track site solely devoted to juniors). Anyway, if you don't have a local velodrome or don't know much about Track Cycling, give The Fever a whirls.
